Showering with Damaged Hair

Showering with Damaged Hair

If your hair is damaged, then you must give it time to repair itself. On this page, we are going to cycle through a few quick tips and tricks for ensuring that your hair is not damaged further when you shower.

How often should you shower?

You should be using shampoo and conditioner on your hair at the most three times a week. Most men and women will need to clean it just two times. Any more than that, and you will be stripping your hair of the natural oils that it needs to thrive. Without these natural oils, your hair has no protection and it will be damaged.

If your hair is excessively oily and you wish to clean it more than three times a week, then use a dry shampoo. Dry shampoo will ensure that your hair looks clean without the vital oils being taken away.

What temperature should the water be at?

When you are shampooing your hair, the temperature must be warm. Warm water allows the soap to work to clear out the dirt and grime from your hair. You absolutely must avoid water which is boiling hot. This will damage the scalp and hair. This will lead to even more damage.

When you are conditioning your hair, however, you must make sure that the water is cold. The colder the better. Apply the conditioner and leave it in for as long as instructed. You then wash it out with cold water. The main reason you are using cold water is to ensure that all the nutrients from the conditioner stay behind. You do not want to wash these nutrients out. Your hair will never be repaired if you do that!

What part of your hair should you clean?

With shampoo, you should only be cleaning the hair close to the roots. This means only the first few inches of your hair. This is where most grime and oil is going to be. However, when it comes to using conditioner, you do not want to be anywhere near the roots. Instead, you will want to focus on the middle section of your hair. This is where most the damage is going to be. If your hair is not damaged, then this is where the hair which is most prone to damage will be. This is because it tends to be a lot dryer.

Drying your hair

When it comes to drying your hair, you should do the following:

  • Never towel dry your hair unless you have a genuine reason for doing so. If you towel dry your hair, then make sure you are gentle. Lightly dab your hair to soak up the moisture. If you are too vigorous, then you will just end up damaging your hair further.
  • Never use a hairdryer unless you have a genuine reason for it. Hairdryers damage hair. If you must use one, then make sure you have it on the lowest possible heat setting. This will prevent further damage.
